Mothers' Union is a global Christian organisation with more than 4 million members worldwide, running local projects, supporting international campaigns, and fundraising in areas such as parental rights, international debt relief and child poverty.
For Mothering Sunday 2010, Mothers' Union chose to stick with the highly successful concept of their 2008 and 2009 'Make a Mother's Day' ethical gift campaigns but, as in previous years, redesigning it for 2010 and offering a whole new range of gifts.
Using the website, visitors can send a Mothering Sunday card when purchasing an ethical gift to help support Mothers' Union projects around the world. The number of gifts in this years campaign has risen from 8 back in 2009 up to 14 in 2010 and a choice of either a Mothering Sunday card or a 'In Memory" card is sent to the recipient.
When people give a gift from the catalogue, they are giving a virtual gift. So with a goat project gift, for example, you help fund a goat project being set up by Mothers' Union members in Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi or Kenya. Gifts this year include items such as: mosquito nets and anti-malarials to help parents learn about malaria; setting up parenting programmes to help kids and their parents; funding a dairy goat project to give a family a source of income; and teaching people in the developing world how to manage money and set up small businesses; and more.
We designed and built the 'Make a Mother's Day' 2010 website for Mothers' Union, including a custom built online store to allow visitors to add any number of chosen gifts to their Shopping Basket and complete their purchases online. The site offers the ability to buy gifts in multiple currencies, making it easier for overseas purchases. There is also an option to add an additional cash donation amount to your shopping basket. During the checkout we display an automatic calculation of what the UK Gift Aid amount would be, giving people the ability to pledge it as part of their purchase.
When ready to place an order the visitor can pay via credit card, debit card, using a secure online checkout. Every transaction is handled by our preferred payment processing company, SecureTrading. We have a relationship with SecureTrading that allows us to access preferential commission rates that are not publicly available, so we can pass those savings directly on to our clients.
The site was designed to be extremely easy to use and purposefully offered a fun approach to what is a serious subject matter. Launching the campaign online has opened up a new world of opportunity for them to raise much needed funds by easily allowing people to support the charity over the web as well as relying on traditional collection methods.
